Making a Class Act: 6 Rules to Ensure Training Sessions at a High Level

Whether participants in a training session are there by choice or obligation, their time is at a premium.

If their training journey is to be worthwhile, it’s worth the effort to set some basic rules of the road. I highly recommend establishing and securing agreement with classroom expectations at the outset.

Keep it clear, simple and at a high level to make it easy for everyone to follow. That way, you’ll avoid as many distractions and disagreements as possible. And you’ll help participants keep their minds open to the training and focused on how they can get the most out of the session.

Here are six fundamental rules fit for any instructor-led training:

  1. Start and stop on time. Not just at the beginning and end of the day, but at breaks, as well. Breaks are crucial!
  2. Silence mobile devices. Trainees are often busy people who sometimes need to take calls, but make sure these calls don’t disrupt the training.
  3. It’s not realistic to insist that everybody ask and answer questions. But it is important that everybody pay attention and take part in activities.
  4. Show mutual respect. Listen when others speak, and avoid sidebar conversations.
  5. Please don’t surf. It’s not realistic to expect everyone to stay off Internet and email, but the least you can do is try to keep it in check.
  6. Have fun and enjoy the experience. A positive attitude is perhaps the most vital habit of training that sticks.
